A public-private alliance in Nelson Tasman has put forward a business case positioning the region to support the New Zealand Defence Force, particularly the Navy, as Devonport Naval Base undergoes a multi-year upgrade and defence spending increases over the coming decade.
The alliance, comprising the Nelson Regional Development Agency, council, iwi, Port Nelson, Kernohan Engineering, Skipper Training NZ and Nelson Airport, has developed a capability statement highlighting more than 65 specialist marine businesses employing around 2,000 people across the Port Nelson precinct. It points to existing infrastructure including Port Nelson's upgraded Calwell marine maintenance facility, with its 550 tonne boat hoist and 2,400 tonne slipway, which has serviced 12 vessels since opening in April.
The case was presented to Defence Minister Chris Penk during a visit last week, with Nelson and Tasman mayors joining alliance representatives. NRDA chief executive Fiona Wilson said the pitch centres on leveraging existing assets rather than seeking new investment.
