Mercury Marine has added a significant new accessory to its lineup with the release of a mid-tiller kit engineered for FourStroke 25hp and 30hp EFI outboards. The kit is aimed squarely at serious anglers and small-boat operators who want the kind of refined control and functionality usually reserved for much larger engines.
The most immediately practical change is the length. Measuring 8.8 inches (223mm) longer than the standard tiller, the mid-tiller brings the hand grip and controls closer to the person at the helm. That extra reach makes a real difference on larger dinghies, inflatables, and alloy runabouts where the operator is seated well forward of the motor. It also suits anyone who prefers to stand while trolling or threading through tight spots at low speed.
What sets this kit apart from a simple handle extension is the engineering behind it. Mercury drew on the tiller system used across its FourStroke range from 40–115hp, translating those ergonomics and integrated electronics into a form suited to smaller, more nimble craft. The control arm offers genuine adjustability across tilt, height, and yaw.
The ratcheted lock provides three mid-range tilt positions at 12°, 30°, and 55°, along with a full vertical stow option. The bottom stop can be dialled in anywhere from 7° above horizontal to 7° below, allowing the operator to fine-tune the grip angle to their preference. Seven yaw settings, covering centre plus 6°, 12°, or 18° to either port or starboard, allow comfortable operation from either side of the boat. The shift lever can be fitted on either side of the arm, and the throttle twist direction, clockwise or counterclockwise, is configurable to suit individual preference.
Feedback and situational awareness are built directly into the tiller. An illuminated warning display keeps the operator informed of engine oil pressure, temperature, electrical faults, and other issues, and flags when the safety lanyard is disconnected. A sealed trim switch sits under the thumb for quick, weatherproof adjustments, while a sealed keyed ignition switch is mounted on the side of the tiller arm.
Mercury's Troll Control feature is also included, enabling push-button RPM adjustment in 10-RPM increments. That level of precision is particularly useful when targeting specific fish species or keeping lures moving in a natural, consistent manner.
Cold-weather outings are well catered for. The tiller comes pre-wired to accept an optional heated hand grip, sold separately, which offers three heat levels. For hunters and anglers heading out during the colder months, that option will be a welcome addition.
The mid-tiller kit became available from mid-March 2025 through authorised Mercury dealers. It is compatible with FourStroke, SeaPro, and ProKicker 25hp and 30hp outboards, including jet variants. For Kiwi boaters running small but capable craft, the kit delivers something more meaningful than extra reach, bringing the control, comfort, and feedback of a larger engine to a lighter, more agile boat.
