It turns out the finish line rarely looks the way you picture it. I'd had visions of jubilant crew, beaming owners, and the kind of dockside celebration that makes for good photographs. What actually greeted us was quieter than that. A handful of tired sailors stepped ashore, not one of them thinking about champagne. After so many long, slow miles aboard a boat built for speed, what they wanted was a hot shower and a few hours of sleep.
Watching them, I decided they had the right idea. Time to follow suit.
