Luanda will become the first city in Southern Africa to host a round of the UIM E1 World Championship, with the Angolan capital staging the fifth round of the all-electric powerboat series on September 12 and 13, 2026.
Racing will take place at the Yacht Club of Luanda, adding the city to a global calendar that already spans four continents, including stops at Lake Como, Monaco and Miami. Known for its deep maritime heritage, natural resources and prime coastal position, Luanda is regarded as one of Africa's key maritime gateways.
Ten teams will compete for glory at the E1 Luanda GP 2026, including Team AlUla, owned by NBA legend LeBron James. James took to social media to share his excitement about the race.
"Can't wait to get to Angola, I've got to get there to support my team, Team AlUla. You know we're bringing that first place. We're going to have an unbelievable time. It's going to be a great experience, great fun. We're going for gold baby, let's go!" said LeBron James.
His post follows a visit to Angola in March by Hollywood star Will Smith, who travelled to the country to announce the race alongside E1 founder and Chairman Alejandro Agag and Angolan Minister of Tourism, Márcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel.
"Africa has always embodied passion and relentless drive. E1 in Angola is more than a moment; it's a movement. This September, the world will be watching and I'm excited to be part of it!" said Will Smith, Westbrook Racing's owner.
The race adds to Angola's rising profile on the world sporting stage, coming alongside its ongoing investment in sport and sustainable development, and fits with E1's push to promote electrified technology as a way to help protect the world's oceans, lakes and waterways.
Alejandro Agag, Founder and Chairman of Formula E, Extreme H and E1, said: "I am thrilled to be bringing the E1 World Championship to the waters and people of Luanda to help inspire Angolan youth through sports. As our newest race location, and our first race in Southern Africa, it is a major statement of intent for us and for the country. I am looking forward to being back in Angola in just two weeks to catch-up with some of our owners, fans and guests and to see some close, competitive racing on Luanda's water."
