Marking its 50th year in business, Florida-based trawler yacht builder Kadey-Krogen has introduced the Krogen 53, a full-displacement passagemaker that steps into the role previously held by the Krogen 52.
The company was established in 1976 and has since launched close to 700 hulls, building its reputation around owner-operated cruising yachts throughout that time. Today its range runs from 44 to 70 feet.
At the heart of the Krogen 53 is the hull philosophy Kadey-Krogen refers to as Pure Full Displacement, a design approach the builder has employed from its earliest years. Where planing hulls rise onto the surface at speed, a full-displacement hull pushes through the water at hull speed, which on a vessel of this size translates to a typical cruising pace of around eight to nine knots. That unhurried gait delivers tangible benefits for serious passagemakers: fuel consumption stays low, range extends accordingly, and the motion offshore remains composed in conditions that would punish a lighter, faster hull. The Krogen 53 carries forward the characteristic fine bow entry, balanced waterplane, and wineglass transom the brand is known for, while offering a wider range of interior arrangements than the model it replaces.
Owners have considerable freedom when it comes to configuring the interior. The galley can be placed forward in the salon following a more traditional layout, or shifted to sit beside the pilothouse steps. Sleeping arrangements come in either a three-stateroom plan or a two-stateroom version that puts the reclaimed space to use as a dedicated office or utility area. Regardless of which layout a buyer selects, the master stateroom is positioned full-beam amidships.
Topside, the Krogen 53 presents a spacious flybridge offering wide-ranging visibility, a boat deck capable of carrying a 14-foot tender, and boarding doors fitted on both the port and starboard sides. For those who prefer sheltered movement between decks, an internal flybridge staircase is offered as an option. The systems specification has been put together with extended offshore voyaging in mind, incorporating large fuel tanks, generous stowage for provisions and spares, and an engine room laid out to allow practical maintenance while underway.
