Kiwi silver and bronze as Aarhus tests ILCA 6 youth fleet all week

Six days of shifting breeze on Aarhus Bay ended with Hermionie Ghicas of Greece and Erik Scheidt of Brazil claiming the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championship titles.

"I felt very comfortable on the boat with this wind and I'm very happy I managed to be strong both mentally, physically and tactically on the water," said Ghicas.

Wright finished the championship in second place, while New Zealand's Chloe Turner completed the podium in third.

Ghicas' win rounds out a Greek double in Aarhus. Eleni Triantou took the ILCA 4 Youth World Championship title earlier this month.

Scheidt entered the final day of the men's fleet with a comfortable lead, having built his campaign on solid, consistent results rather than any single standout race. He'd already secured the world title before the final race was even sailed.

"I knew I had the lead, so I was comfortable with that, but with three Gold fleet races anything can happen. I had some expectations coming into the championship, but I did not expect to win this week. In the end, I think consistency was the key," said Scheidt.

For the Brazilian, the title was also something to share with the person who has supported him closely throughout his sailing career.

"My father is always by my side and helps me a lot with the psychological side. I already talked to him and of course he congratulated me," he added.

Behind him, Spain's Nikko Palou finished strongly to move into second overall, while Italy's Lorenzo Ghirotti claimed third.

Racing wrapped up for all 429 sailors from 45 nations. Aarhus Bay had thrown everything at them, light and shifty one day, hard and punishing the next, rewarding those with the patience and strength to match whatever showed up.

That meant delays. Postponements, tricky calls from race officials, sailors sitting on the water waiting for a breeze to settle.

Frustrating at the time, but it left the fleet with a genuinely broad range of conditions to handle across the week.

At 6pm, sailors, coaches, officials and volunteers gathered on the shore for the Prize Giving Ceremony, where the new world champions and podium finishers received their medals.

Alongside the overall medals, the best U17 sailors were recognised too. Derin Bartan finished as the top U17 sailor in the women's championship, while Palou, already silver medallist overall, added the men's U17 title to his week.

The ceremony brought the 2026 ILCA 6 Youth World Championships to a close, and with it, two consecutive Youth World Championships hosted in Aarhus this August.
