Francesco Kayrouz and Hamish McLaren climbed six places into the top 10 on day two of the Olympic Classes Regatta in San Pedro, leading the Kiwi charge at the LA2028 Olympic venue.
The former 49er junior world championship silver medallists thrived in the lighter, more unpredictable conditions that replaced the stronger sea breeze of the opening day. A second-place finish set the tone, backed up with a sixth and a 13th to leave them eighth overall after six races.
Fellow Kiwi crew Mattias Coutts and Oscar Gunn remain firmly in contention at 11th overall, having slipped four places from seventh. They continue to lead the under-23 standings and sit just 10 points behind Kayrouz and McLaren.
Defending world and European champions Seb Menzies and George Lee Rush also moved in the right direction, climbing five places to 15th. They are just 11 points outside the top 10 heading into day three.
At the top of the 49er fleet, Germany's Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger hold the overall lead. Australia's Harry Price and Max Paul have moved into second ahead of France's Erwan Fischer and Clément Péquin, with the fleet remaining tightly packed after six races.
In the Nacra 17, Micah Wilkinson and Kate Stewart climbed to eighth overall after another consistent day. Back-to-back eighth-place finishes were followed by a regatta-best fourth in the final race. France's Tim Mourniac and Aloïse Retornaz continue to lead, with Australia's Brin Liddell and Rhiannan Brown in second ahead of Sweden's Emil Järudd and Hanna Jonsson.
Two days of contrasting conditions have given the fleet a thorough look at what the LA2028 racecourse can serve up. Racing continues through to Saturday.
