The GBR IRC Committee is investigating how artificial intelligence could improve course design and rating fairness in yacht racing.
At its September 2026 meeting in Lymington, members discussed using AI to analyse race results alongside course geometry, weather data and boat performance information. The goal is to identify systematic anomalies in either ratings or course design that affect fairness between boat types.
Committee members reported early experiments where software-generated course recommendations already aligned closely with decisions made by experienced race officers. The potential application would see AI assisting race officers to design courses that better balance different boat characteristics.
