Sydney forum puts maritime decarbonisation solutions under one roof

Sydney Harbour will take on an unusual kind of charge this month when the Maritime Emissions Reduction Coalition (MERC) convenes Discover Maritime Innovations 2025. The one-day event draws operators, suppliers, entrepreneurs, and academics under a single roof with a shared purpose: reducing greenhouse gas emissions from one of the world's most complex and economically vital industries.

The maritime footprint across Australia and New Zealand stretches across ferries, fisheries, offshore wind, and defence, and every corner of it faces the same pressing question: how to decarbonise without stalling the engines of commerce. MERC was established specifically to confront that challenge. The coalition connects stakeholders from manufacturing, energy, finance, government, and education, helping maritime businesses move beyond small-scale pilots and into fleet-wide transformation. It pushes for policy settings that support the transition, links innovators with operators willing to go first, and works to scale up homegrown technologies that build Australia's sovereign capability in clean marine operations.

The Sydney conference is built to be practical as well as inspiring. Across the day, two rounds of sector panels will run through eight streams covering marine tourism, ports, offshore construction, defence, aquaculture, marinas, and boatbuilding. Each session is anchored in what is already proving effective on the water, alongside an honest look at what still needs to shift.

Running between those panels, a series of focused innovation talks will put real solutions in the spotlight. EV Maritime CEO Michael Eaglen will present a global perspective on ferry electrification, drawing on his company's experience leading Auckland's low-emission ferry programme and advising governments and transit agencies around the world. EV Maritime's 200-passenger electric fast ferries now entering service for Auckland Transport illustrate how modular design and standardised systems can make electrification commercially workable at genuine scale.

Another New Zealand voice will carry weight at the conference. Fiona Bycroft, co-founder and CEO of Naut, brings a decade of experience developing electric propulsion systems in real-world marine conditions. Her presentation, Enabling Marine Electrification Through Practical Innovation, examines how flexible, boat-agnostic powertrains allow operators to select vessels suited to their particular mission while still making the move to electric power. A user-first philosophy, it aims to lower the barriers to adoption rather than demanding fleets adapt themselves to the technology.

The programme reaches well beyond battery-electric solutions. Hullbot's underwater cleaning robots reduce drag and cut fuel consumption; Greenroom Robotics demonstrates autonomous survey vessels capable of slashing emissions by 80 per cent; Ampcontrol steps through the practicalities of grid-to-dock charging infrastructure; Tidetech shows what artificial intelligence-driven voyage optimisation can deliver; and Refuelling Solutions puts the case for renewable diesel as a straight drop-in replacement for commercial fleets. Even the traditional trades are being reimagined, with EClass Outboards retraining marine mechanics to retrofit familiar outboard casings with zero-emission drive systems.

Taken together, the day amounts to a working blueprint for the maritime energy transition, grounded in technologies already operating rather than in future promises. MERC's position is straightforward: decarbonisation is no longer confined to the realm of theory. Across New Zealand and Australia, innovators are already well underway, and the course has been set.
