Josh Hyde has reclaimed the outright lead at the 59th Governor's Cup in Newport Beach, holding a two-point buffer over the chasing pack with just two matches remaining in the round robin.
Hyde sits on 15 wins after going 4-1 on Day 3 and has already secured his Semi-final berth. Fellow New Zealander Sam Scott shares second place on 13 wins alongside Australian James Hayhoe, though neither has mathematically locked up a spot yet.
Hayhoe had been level with Hyde overnight but dropped two races on Day 3 to fall back. His first loss came against Peter Herlihy (USA), winner of the 2026 US Youth Match Racing Championship for the Rose Cup. Herlihy then backed that up by beating Hyde as well, finishing the day 4-1 as the standout performer of the session.
Three teams share fourth on 12 wins and remain in contention for the remaining Semi-final berths: Youth Match Racing Worlds runner-up Daniel Kemp (AUS), Siena Nichols (USA), and Christian Prendergast (USA).
Before Day 3, Hayhoe had noted that every match at this year's 59th Governor's Cup is tough, and the racing bore that out across the board. Conditions were again close to perfect, with clear skies, warm temperatures and 6-7 knots building to around 10 by the end of the day.
Friday brings the conclusion of the round robin, with two flights still to sail. Once those are done, the first-to-three-wins Semi-finals get underway alongside consolation racing to settle places 5 through 12. Saturday wraps up the Semis before the Final and the Petit Final, a first-to-two-wins contest deciding third and fourth between the two losing Semi-finalists.
The Governor's Cup, presented by Terry Causey and the Call of the Sea Foundation, is the oldest and most prestigious youth match racing championship in the world. Its alumni include two-time America's Cup winner James Spithill (AUS), all three finalists for the US Rolex Yachtsman of the Year in Justin Callahan, Taylor Canfield, and Paul Cayard, and Cole Tapper (AUS), who won his second GovCup last year before going on to claim the Congressional Cup.
