Quebec's Hydroplane Racing League is heading into the 2026 season with a cleaner competitive structure, renaming two of its classes to better reflect how drivers progress through the sport.
The changes affect the S-2.5 litre and Formula 2500-F classes, both of which HRL says no longer accurately represent current engine performance. From 2026, these become Formula R and Formula F respectively.
Formula R is the more significant of the two changes. The "R" stands for Recruit, Rookie, and Development, and the class is designed specifically to support emerging drivers.
Alongside the rename comes a technical adjustment: Honda engines in Formula R will have an engine speed limiter applied through programming, set at a lower RPM ceiling than in Formula F. HRL says this helps less experienced drivers adapt to racing conditions progressively while also creating more balanced competitive conditions for teams running Ford engines.
Formula F is a straightforward rename from Formula 2500-F. No technical or sporting regulations change, only the name.
Both classes share the same type of boats, with specific technical subtleties between them. The updated naming structure puts the focus on driver experience and championship progression rather than engine displacement figures.
Each season, the HRL Board of Directors will determine how many boats are assigned to each class based on participation levels and driver experience. Any boat not affiliated with an HRL member will automatically be placed in Formula F.
The league says the restructure is intended to provide a clear, fair, and progressive competitive framework that supports driver development while keeping the standard of competition high.
