"Over two decades ago we pioneered the enclosed bridge, with an elevated helm position, so maximum visibility whilst driving," he explains. "It also gives you a very safe, luxurious place for all those passengers on board."
For a skipper managing a long-distance passage, contending with rapidly shifting weather, or navigating a challenging stretch of coastline, situational awareness is not a luxury but a necessity. A raised helm station enclosed in glass delivers the widest possible view of the surrounding water while simultaneously offering protection from wind, spray, and the full range of temperature conditions an offshore voyage might produce. From the aggressive rake at the bow through to the flattened aft running surface, Maritimo hulls are shaped for efficient planing, reduced drag, and consistent, predictable behaviour across a wide range of sea conditions. The hull's deadrise transitions are optimised to balance stability at rest with genuine performance when underway. "We do an engine-room liner and take it all the way through, incorporating the fuel tanks, the accommodation, and the structural area of the hull," he explains. "The main structure is a fibreglass liner, which then gets glassed to the hull skin to deliver monocoque level strength and rigidity."
The practical effect of this approach is the elimination of traditional reliance on multiple independent bulkheads, stringers, and frames. Hull and liner are bonded both chemically and mechanically, forming a single integrated structure rather than an assembly of separate components. "You get a better connection between all the pieces, and also, operator facing areas are finished in gloss gelcoat."
The benefits of this construction method resolve into four clear advantages: exceptional strength and rigidity for handling offshore conditions; reduced risk of structural creaks, shifts, or failures accumulating over time; improved safety through watertight compartmentalisation; and a clean, maintenance-friendly engine room finished in gelcoat rather than exposed timber or secondary coatings.
