Few designs in recreational boating carry the kind of instant recognition that the Hinckley Picnic Boat commands, and the line has just gained its most ambitious entry yet. At the Palm Beach International Boat Show, Hinckley Yachts introduced the Picnic Boat 45, a model that now sits at the top of the entire Picnic Boat range.
The lineage behind the Picnic Boat 45 stretches back more than thirty years of Downeast design tradition, though this is far from a straightforward exercise in scaling things up. The design brief pushed firmly into lifestyle territory while leaving untouched the aesthetic sensibility and handling character that built the line's reputation in the first place.
Gavin McClintock was unambiguous about what the boat represents: "The Picnic Boat has never been just a yacht; it represents a distinctly Hinckley way of being on the water. For decades, it has defined a style of boating centered on ease, elegance, and time shared with friends and family. With the Picnic Boat 45, we've evolved that icon into our most social design yet, expanding the spaces where people gather while preserving the effortless handling and timeless lines that make a Hinckley unmistakable."
A substantial portion of the design effort has been directed at rethinking how people actually use the boat, how they move through it and where they choose to settle. The deck layout has been significantly reconfigured to open up flow between the aft cockpit, the bow, and the swim platform. The aft cockpit remains the social core, with seating and dining arrangements adaptable to whatever the day calls for. Forward, a dedicated lounge area and integrated bow seating create additional gathering spaces, spreading guests across the boat rather than concentrating everyone in one spot.
Among the more considered details is the stern platform, which manages a neat double function. Tied to a dock, it serves as a proper boarding staircase. At anchor, it lowers to become a swim terrace. That single feature captures the broader thinking behind the Picnic Boat 45: this is a boat designed to be lived aboard through a full day or a weekend, not simply used to move between destinations.
Down below, the layout accommodates two cabins along with a head and storage arranged to suit both day trips and short coastal passages.
Power comes from twin Volvo Penta diesels rated at 725hp each, driving HamiltonJet waterjets. The combination puts an estimated top speed of around 40 knots within reach, with a cruising speed in the region of 34 knots. The waterjet drivetrain also delivers shallow draft and a level of low-speed precision that proves its worth when threading into confined anchorages.
Coming in at just under 50 feet overall, the Picnic Boat 45 marks a genuine leap in scale from its predecessors. What Hinckley has shown with this launch is that a design carrying more than thirty years of loyal following can still reach for something bigger, and do so without surrendering the qualities that earned that loyalty in the first place.
