After an eight-win clean sheet on day one, Josh Hyde has company at the top of the Governor's Cup leaderboard. James Hayhoe (AUS, Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron) has drawn level with the New Zealander, both sitting on 12 wins after a second day of tight racing off Newport Beach.
Hyde, sailing for Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, had looked a class apart on Tuesday. Wednesday was a different story. "None of these matches are easy," Hayhoe said after racing. "In our race with Josh we had a penalty to kill just before the finish. We managed to do it, and won only by a meter."
Fellow Kiwi Sam Scott (Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron) has moved into third on ten wins, meaning two of the top three are from New Zealand. Siena Nichols (USA, Balboa YC) sits fourth on nine wins. At 17, Nichols is the youngest competitor in the fleet by two years.
The biggest talking point of the day was Morgan Pinckney (USA, Newport Harbor YC), the reigning 2026 Youth Match Racing World Champion. Pinckney opened with three straight wins, then went 1-3 in his final four matches. One of those losses came after kelp fouled his keel mid-race, forcing him to back down to clear it and surrender the lead. He is now tied for fifth on eight wins alongside Youth Worlds runner-up Daniel Kemp (AUS, Royal Prince Alfred YC) and Christian Prendergast (USA, Chicago YC).
Fifteen of 22 flights in the double round-robin are complete, with seven more scheduled for Thursday to close out the second round robin. The top four sit two points clear of Kemp, Pinckney, and Prendergast, though all three retain a mathematical path to the semi-finals.
The fleet is racing in GovCup 22s on the Pacific Ocean off Newport Beach. Wednesday's conditions were 7-9 knots under clear skies, with most matches finishing within a couple of boat lengths after four-leg windward-leeward courses.
The head-to-head semi-finals, first to three wins, begin Friday. The winners advance to the finals, also first to three, on Saturday.
