Hayden Whitburn brings 20-plus years of sailing experience to Kiwi Yachting sales role

2 min read

Hayden Whitburn is not a newcomer to New Zealand's sailing world. Kiwi Yachting's announcement of his appointment as Sales Representative simply makes it official, bringing one of the industry's more quietly influential figures into a role that suits him well.

Whitburn spent 16 years with North Sails New Zealand, a tenure that took him from apprentice sailmaker all the way through to purchasing and sales manager, and eventually to a partnership in the business. That progression gave him an unusually complete picture of the sport: the technical demands of one-design racing, the exacting standards of superyacht projects, and the human networks that run through it all.

His commercial experience didn't stop at sailmaking. Whitburn has held a sales management role at Bic Sport NZ, overseen RS Sailing distribution, and worked extensively with Yachting New Zealand and the Russell Coutts Foundation across coaching and event management. He has taken youth teams to international competition, managed the logistics of regattas, and developed learn-to-sail programmes at clubs around the country. Taken together, those roles have given him a grounding in the grassroots of the sport that few purely commercial operators can match.

Whitburn said he was "proud to be joining Kiwi Yachting" and that he was looking forward to building on the relationships that founders Richard & Isabel Macalister and Dean Barker have developed over many years. "They've built an amazing business and strong relationships throughout New Zealand and overseas," he said. "My goal is to continue those relationships and help grow the business even further."

His time as a Regional Support Officer at Yachting New Zealand, combined with long-standing ties to clubs, coaches, and manufacturers across the country, means he arrives at Kiwi Yachting with more than two decades of contacts spanning junior fleets through to America's Cup campaigns. Those who know him point to a hands-on style, a talent for quiet diplomacy, and a genuine ability to connect people across different corners of the sport.

Managing Director Richard Macalister said the appointment reflects the company's ambition to strengthen both its retail and technical sales presence nationwide. Kiwi Yachting has been operating since 1988, growing from a specialist rigging and deck hardware supplier into one of New Zealand's most respected marine businesses, with representation across leading global brands in rigging, sail handling, and deck equipment. Whitburn's background fits squarely within the values the company has built over nearly four decades of customer relationships.

For Whitburn, the transition from sailmaking and coaching into client relations and business development is a logical next step rather than a departure. "It's about helping boat owners and builders make the right choices, whether that's fittings, systems, or sails, and supporting them long after the sale," he said.
