Day one of the 2026 Junior World Championship in Gdynia has delivered a share of the lead between France's Lomane Valade and Julien Bunel and Norway's Julia Jacobsen and Victor Loof. Both teams recorded an identical 2-1-1 scoreline across three races sailed in a steady northerly breeze of 12-16 knots on Gdynia Bay.
Fifty-five teams from around the world completed the three races. The Oscar flag was flown throughout the day, permitting pumping under class rules, and the breeze held consistent, finishing at around 14-16 knots.
"Today was super hard in conditions, super difficult, but we managed to win the start, and we had really good speed with other boats. So we finished 2nd in one race," said Valade and Bunel.
The French pair were silver medallists at the previous Junior Worlds. Their Norwegian rivals matched them result for result, leaving both teams tied heading into day two.
Valade and Bunel are carrying some extra context into the week. "For me, this is our first competition of the year because I had an injury, so we are really happy to be here," the duo said. "Now there is a lot of pressure, but I think it's good pressure. For me, this kind of pressure is motivating. We still have four more days of racing. I hope we finish on Friday. I don't know what will happen, but we are aiming for our first medal race, and then we will see."
Germany's Amelie Wehrle and Riccardo Honold sit third overall. They won one race and placed second in another, but an eighth in the final race has left them just behind the leaders, with one discard already in effect. Wehrle and Honold took the first race win in the Yellow Fleet, while the reigning 2025 Junior World Champions, Israel's Roy Levy and Ariel Gal, won the Blue Fleet opener and sit fourth overall.
Great Britain's James Crossley and Noah Fitzgerald are fifth, the highest-ranked all-male crew. In the Under-21 category, Italy's Lisa Vucetti and Vittorio Bonifacio lead after day one.
