Steinberg and van Opzeeland lead the way after a chaotic opening day at the 2026 iQFOiL World Championships, with four men's sailors finishing dead level on points after Weymouth and Portland served up an aggressive start to the six-day regatta.
Racing got underway at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, the same waters that hosted sailing at the London 2012 Olympic Games. It made for a fitting stage, with 186 athletes from 41 nations gathered for the championship.
There is a local flavour to this year's event that raises the stakes. Both defending World Champions, Emma Wilson and Andy Brown, are home sailors starting their title defences on waters they know intimately, but they face exceptionally deep international fleets as they try to retain their rainbow jerseys.
Conditions were ideal from the first gun, allowing the Race Committee to launch straight into Upwind Sprints. The short, intense format put acceleration, speed and tactical decision-making under pressure from the outset, setting a fast-paced tone for the championship.
The men's fleet never got its planned Course Racing away. Conditions shifted, so the Race Committee instead ran four Upwind Sprints, split across six heats.
Four sailors finished the day level on points, producing an exceptionally tight leaderboard that needed a tiebreak to separate.
Reigning European Champion Luuc van Opzeeland (NED) came out on the right side of that tiebreak to take the early overall lead. But there is virtually nothing between the frontrunners: Paweł Tarnowski (POL), Nicolas Goyard (FRA) and Yoav Omer (ISR) are all level on points and firmly in contention after the opening day.
