Two new multi-spectral camera systems from FLIR represent a genuine step forward for professional marine operators. The M460 and M560 bring together technologies that have until now either been unavailable or scattered across separate pieces of equipment, packaging them into compact units aimed at first responders, commercial operators, and superyacht crews who need dependable, all-conditions imaging at sea.
Each system pairs a high-performance thermal sensor with a 4K low-light visible camera as its foundation. An optional 12KM ITAR-free laser rangefinder and a long-range, tight-beam LED laser spotlight round out the package, making these something considerably more than incremental thermal camera upgrades.
Artificial intelligence sits at the core of what makes the M460 and M560 distinctive. A neural network runs continuously in the background, scanning the surrounding water and automatically identifying and classifying common marine targets, including vessels, buoys, and people in the water. Once a target is selected, the system assumes tracking responsibility, using dynamic pan and tilt control to hold a lock through rough seas, busy waterways, and high-speed manoeuvres without demanding constant operator input.
That tracking performance is underpinned by what FLIR describes as the marine industry's first three-axis gyro stabilisation system. Compensating automatically for pitch, roll, and yaw, the system produces smooth, stable imagery under conditions that would otherwise introduce distracting motion blur. The stabilisation also benefits the AI acquisition process directly, keeping the camera steady at precisely the moments when a clear image matters most.
The two models are distinguished primarily by their thermal sensor technology and zoom range. The M460 uses a high-sensitivity, long-wave infrared thermal sensor offering strong contrast, refined spatial filtering, and image sharpening, with a 5x optical and 4x digital zoom lens suited to picking out distant targets early. The M560 steps up to a mid-wave infrared thermal sensor and a 14x optical and 8x digital zoom lens, delivering superior image quality and extended range performance for operations where distance is the critical factor.
A shared feature called Colour Thermal Vision applies colour information from the visible camera to the thermal display, adding a layer of situational awareness that a standard monochrome thermal image cannot provide. Navigation marks appear in their correct red and green, and vessels along with coastal features become easier to interpret with colour overlays applied to what would otherwise be a monochrome thermal scene. The visible camera brings 20x optical and 12x digital zoom to the combination, with the same three-axis stabilisation ensuring the high-resolution imagery it produces matches the quality of the thermal feed.
Both cameras incorporate an integrated tight-beam laser spotlight with a reach of up to 1km and deliberately limited light scatter, preserving the effectiveness of the 4K camera alongside it. For operators who need to know exactly how far away a target is, an optional pre-installed ITAR-free laser rangefinder is available, capable of measuring target distance out to 6.5 nautical miles even when visibility is poor.
