Estonia and Lithuania have secured their places at the SSL Gold Final Brasil 2026 after two unraceable days at the SSL Gold Cup European Qualifiers left the final standings to rest on just three completed races.
Wednesday brought gusts to 25 knots but from too many directions to set a course. Thursday offered five-knot breezes that arrived in fits and starts before fading away entirely. The race committee held out as long as possible, but at the 4pm deadline were left with no choice but to hoist AP over A and cancel racing.
With the standings locked after those three earlier races, the Estonian Icebreakers topped Group D on eight points, ahead of the Austrian Eagles on six and Slovenian Krpani 1860 on four. In Group E, the Lithuanian Ambers led on 11 points, clear of Norwegian Norstream on nine, Belgian Sea Devils on six, and the Serbian Eagles on four.
It's a hard result to absorb for the teams who miss out. Three races is a thin margin on which to decide who progresses to what the league describes as the second Football World Cup of sailing. Both the Icebreakers and the Ambers performed when it counted.
The prize-giving brought all teams together on the main stage, and the mood from the two qualifying nations was jubilant. The champagne was sprayed, the national anthems played, and any rivalry between Estonia and Lithuania can wait until Rio. For now, both camps were equally happy to celebrate their progression together.
The next SSL Gold Cup European Qualifiers take place at Lake Neuchâtel from 14 to 17 July.
