New Zealand's sailing programme faces one of its most demanding international stretches of the year, with youth competitors and NZL Sailing Squad athletes competing simultaneously across Europe and North America throughout July.
The 29er World Championship in Kiel, Germany, is among the first events underway, with racing continuing through to 9 July. The New Zealand contingent arrives in strong shape after Kiel Week, where four Kiwi crews finished inside the top 20 of a fleet numbering more than 100 boats. Nelsen Meacham and Oli Stone were the standout performers, finishing fourth, and they head into the world championship alongside Ewan Brazle and Toby Clark, Matteo Barker and Leo Brown, Bella Jenkins and Jess Handley, and Blake Batten and Hugo Smith, all carrying genuine momentum.
One day later, the 420 World Championships open in Biscarrosse, France, where Amber Hughes and Phoebe Willis, Zofia Wells and Charlotte Handley, and Ashton Cooke and Charlie Bridger will carry New Zealand's colours. Wells and Handley bring useful recent form into the regatta, having posted a 15th-place result at Kiel Week against a highly competitive international fleet.
A third front opens simultaneously in Spain, where the iQFOiL Youth and Junior World Championships get underway on 3 July at Ballena Alegre. Margarita Konstantinova and Elbe White form the New Zealand under-19 women's team, while the under-19 men's squad comprises Vlad Misescu, Josh Tuck, Finn Davies and Ben Rist, who previously represented New Zealand as a member of the NZL Sailing Foundation Youth World Championship Team.
In Gdynia, Poland, from 11 to 17 July, Tessa Clinton and Will Mason are New Zealand's sole entry in the 470 Junior World Championship, taking on a fleet of 51 boats. The pair offered an early sign of their potential with a 12th-place finish together at Kiel Week.
Two North American championships in California complete New Zealand's July programme. At San Pedro, the ILCA North American Championships run from 9 to 12 July, with George Pilkington, Caleb Armit and George Gautrey contesting the ILCA 7 class and Greta Pilkington and Tom Pilkington lining up in the ILCA 6.
Later in the month, Long Beach hosts the iQFOiL North American Championships from 25 to 27 July, at the venue designated for sailing at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Paris 2024 Olympians Josh Armit and Veerle ten Have headline the New Zealand squad, joined by Eli Liefting, Blake Hinsley, Davies, White and Daniella Wooldridge, along with rising windsurfers Aimee Bright and Stella Bilger. Bright claimed a silver medal at the 2026 iQFOiL European Championships in Portimão, Portugal, in May, while Bilger took gold at the previous year's under-23 World Championships at the same venue.
Running through the California schedule, many of New Zealand's Olympic campaign sailors will also contest the Olympic Classes Regatta at San Pedro, which spans 17 July to 8 August. The ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and mixed 470 fleets take to the water in the opening week from 17 to 24 July, with the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 classes following from 1 to 8 August.
