Going into Race 7, the final fleet race of the 2026 SailGP Sydney event, Spain's Los Gallos held the lead on 48 points. The United States sat second on 40, with Australia close behind on 38. Emirates GBR were fourth on 37, Red Bull Italy fifth on 33 and Artemis sixth on 31. The margins were tight and Sydney Harbour had offered little breeze all afternoon.
The race carried weight well beyond a single points haul. Los Gallos had already secured a finals berth, but second and third on the overall leaderboard remained unresolved. Race 7 would determine who joined Spain in the finale and who went home without a result.
What followed reshuffled both the wind and the standings.
The fleet got away cleanly in modest pressure that had built since the previous race, but within minutes the breeze rotated left. Boats committed to a straight lane suddenly found themselves sailing extra distance, while those already on the favoured angle picked up immediate gains.
ROCKWOOL Racing reacted first. Nicolai Sehested's crew stayed in phase with the shift, avoided unnecessary manoeuvres, and sailed a direct line to the mark while rivals lost valuable metres around them. Denmark rounded clear at the front and were never seriously threatened from that point on.
Red Bull Italy read the conditions well and finished second. NorthStar Canada found their rhythm late but made it count, crossing third. Mubadala Brazil rounded out the top four with a steady performance throughout.
The fight for finals qualification defined the racing behind them. Australia were caught by the shift at the first mark, forced into an additional manoeuvre, and could not recover the lost ground, eventually finishing tenth. Emirates GBR sailed a controlled race to fifth, while the United States crossed in sixth, managing their points carefully.
Los Gallos, protected by their earlier cushion, came home eighth. Germany placed seventh, Switzerland ninth and Artemis eleventh.
Race 7 awarded Denmark 10 points, Italy 9 and Canada 8, with Great Britain collecting 6 and the United States 5.
Tallied across seven fleet races in which breeze was at a premium, consistency proved the defining factor of the weekend. Spain advance on the strength of early dominance. Great Britain qualify through measured sailing across the weekend. The United States secured their place by managing risk when it mattered most.
For Australia, one costly moment in shifting breeze ended their campaign on home water. It is the first time since SailGP began that they have failed to reach the Sydney event finals.
One race remains to decide who will be crowned the 2026 SailGP Sydney winner.
