Australian Sailing has awarded Life Membership, its highest honour, to Daniel Belcher and Barry Johnson in recognition of decades of work spanning governance and technical development within the sport.
Life membership is reserved for individuals whose leadership and expertise have left a lasting mark on sailing. Both men qualify several times over.
Belcher's path began with volunteer roles in the International 470 Class between 2000 and 2004. From there he worked through sailing clubs around the world before joining the Australian Sailing Board of Directors in 2014, a seat that eventually led to the presidency from 2019 to 2022.
Along the way he sat on the One Sailing Governance Reform Steering Committee, served as Secretary-General of the Oceania Sailing Federation, and took roles on World Sailing's Council and Events Committee. He was elected World Sailing Vice-President in 2024 and continues in that post. He also chaired Australian Sailing's Olympic Selection Panel for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Johnson's contribution runs deeper into the technical side of the sport, the measurement, equipment and class rules work that keeps racing fair.
His record spans decades of Australian sailing administration: Technical Advisor to the America's Cup Committee from 1986 to 87, a Royal Perth Yacht Club Board member from 1998 to 2003, and a Yachting Association of Western Australia Board member from 1999 to 2003. He also held leadership roles within the Australian Mirror and 420 Classes, as well as the International 29er and 49er Classes.
From 2004 to 2020 he gave extensive service to the International Sailing Federation, World Sailing's forerunner, sitting on its Equipment Committee and International Measurers Sub-Committee, among other roles. As a World Sailing International Measurer, Johnson has contributed to the technical delivery of six Olympic Games, from Sydney 2000 to Tokyo 2020.
Australian Sailing President Shevaun Bruland said the pair's impact on the sport had been significant and lasting.
"Daniel and Barry have each given an enormous amount to sailing, contributing their expertise, leadership and countless hours of time to strengthen our sport at both a national and international level," Bruland said. "Their commitment over many years, indeed decades, has helped shape sailing into what it is today, and it is fitting that their contributions are recognised through Australian Sailing Life Membership."
Belcher and Johnson now join the full list of Life Members held on Australian Sailing's history page, a record of service few in the sport will ever match.
