No tsunami threat was identified following the earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Cebu City sits within the country's central Visayas region and has a population of nearly 1 million, according to the US Geological Survey. The survey placed the quake at a depth of 10km, centred approximately 20km from the city of Bogo, and reported that a magnitude 5.2 aftershock was also recorded in the region.
There were no immediate reports of deaths or damage.
