Peter Cowan has put New Zealand's paracanoe programme on notice at the 2026 ICF Canoe Sprint & Paracanoe World Championships, storming straight into the Mens VL3 200m A final on the opening day of racing in Poznan.
The championships got underway on the Malta River Course on Wednesday night NZT, running through to Sunday 30 August, with more than 900 athletes chasing world titles and Olympic and Paralympic qualification points. For New Zealand's paddlers, this is the big one.
The Kiwi contingent spans both sprint and paracanoe disciplines. Scott Martlew races the Mens KL2 200m, Finn Murphy the Mens KL3 200m, and Cowan the Mens VL3 200m. Aimee Fisher takes on the Womens K1 500m, while Quaid Thompson doubles up in the Mens K1 1000m and Mens K1 5000m. The Womens K4 500m crew of Olivia Brett, Jacqueline Kennedy, Greer Morley and Lucy Matehaere line up alongside the Mens K4 500m boat of James Munro, Grant Clancy, Kurtis Imrie and Hamish Legarth.
Day one delivered plenty for New Zealand fans to celebrate. The men's K4 500m crew finished fifth in their heat to advance to the semifinal, while the women's K4 500m boat of Brett, Kennedy, Morley and Matehaere progressed on the back of a seventh-place finish.
Aimee Fisher was the standout of the opening session, winning her K1 500m heat outright to move straight into the semifinal. Quaid Thompson backed that up with third in his K1 1000m heat, also advancing.
Then came the highlight of the day. Cowan won his Mens VL3 200m heat outright, bypassing the semifinal altogether to book his place in the A final.
New Zealand fans will want to be up early over the coming days to catch more of this.
Day two brings more Kiwis onto the water in the small hours of Friday morning NZT. The Womens K4 500m semifinal goes at 12.36am, followed by the Mens K4 500m semifinal at 12.48am. Scott Martlew races his KL2 200m heat at 1.50am, with Finn Murphy's KL3 200m heat following shortly after at 1.55am.
New Zealand audiences can watch the racing live on Sky Sport, while coverage is also available via the Planet Canoe YouTube channel, the official channel of the International Canoe Federation, through a monthly membership subscription.
With Cowan already through to an A final and several more Kiwis fighting for lanes of their own, this is one worth setting an alarm for.
