The five-race Doyle Sails Gold Cup Series is under way, with defending line champion Equilibrium fastest around Waiheke and Clockwork taking the opening PHRF win at Richmond Yacht Club’s Spring Regatta.
The 2026/27 Doyle Sails Gold Cup Series is under way, and after 50 nautical miles around the Hauraki Gulf there is already very little separating some of its leading boats.
Richmond Yacht Club’s Spring Regatta provided the opening round on 19 September, sending the Gold Cup fleet around Rangitoto and Motutapu, northeast to Gannet Rock and around Waiheke before the return to Auckland.
It was the first of five races in a series that brings together some of the longer races run by Auckland’s yacht clubs, progressing from daytime racing around the Hauraki Gulf towards an overnight finale in February.
Five races, with four to count
The Gold Cup has been bringing Auckland’s longer yacht races together since 1981, when Royal Akarana Yacht Club proposed combining events run by different clubs into a common series rather than having them compete for entries.
That cooperative structure remains central to the series, with Richmond Yacht Club, Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Royal Akarana Yacht Club and Bucklands Beach Yacht Club involved.
Last season attracted 26 entries across the five events. One race could be discarded, leaving each boat’s best four results to determine its nett score.
Few boats demonstrated the value of consistency better than Graham Matthews’ Botin Carkeek 55 Equilibrium. It opened the 2025/26 series by winning the Spring Regatta on elapsed time, then finished second in both the Roy McDell Memorial and Bean Rock Race. Fourth in the Percy Jones Memorial became its discard before another win in the season-ending Balokovic Cup.
Two wins and two seconds left Equilibrium with six nett points and the overall line title. Vaughn Clark’s Soto 40 Alegre was second on 10, with David Wade’s E 30 S Liquid Luck third on 18.

Equilibrium begins its title defence in front
Twelve months later, Equilibrium has started in much the same way.
Seven boats started their Gold Cup campaigns at the 2026 Spring Regatta. Of the six monohulls that completed the course, Equilibrium was again quickest, finishing the 50nm race in 5h 14m 13s. Steve Mair’s Shaw 12 Clockwork was only 5m 50s behind in 5h 20m 03s.
Quintin Fowler’s More 55 Rum Bucket followed in 6h 01m 38s, ahead of Nigel Hendy’s Dufour 45e Nirvana, Derek Grul’s Dibley Fulcrum and Jonathan Gravit’s Bakewell White 38 Visage.
Mike Mackey’s Schionning CM46 Levity contested the Gold Cup multihull division and completed the same course in 5h 26m 10s.
For Equilibrium, the result puts the first building block of another line campaign in place. It also came 21m 11s quicker than its winning elapsed time at last year’s Spring Regatta.

Clockwork strikes first on PHRF
The opening PHRF result looked very different. Clockwork corrected to 5h 29m 39s to take the win, with Rum Bucket just 1m 15s behind. Equilibrium was another 1m 51s back in third.
After 50nm and more than five hours of racing, only 3m 06s separated the three on corrected time.
It was also a considerable change from last year's opener. Nirvana won the 2025 Spring Regatta on PHRF, ahead of Carpe Diem and Rum Bucket, while the line-winning Equilibrium corrected to eighth. This year Nirvana began its PHRF campaign in fourth, while Clockwork has immediately put itself at the front.

Roy McDell brings Clockwork back to familiar ground
Round two now provides one of the more interesting comparisons with last season.
The Roy McDell Memorial comes on 3 October, and it was the race Clockwork won when it joined the 2025/26 Gold Cup after missing the opening Spring Regatta. Equilibrium finished second that day and Alegre third.
This time Clockwork heads there having already shown how closely it can match Equilibrium. Only 5m 50s separated them over the Spring Regatta’s 50nm course, while on PHRF the order was reversed, with Clockwork beating Equilibrium by 3m 06s.

After Roy McDell, the Gold Cup continues with the Bean Rock Race in November and Percy Jones Memorial in December before the series concludes with the Balokovic Cup in February.
Last season showed why it is too early to read much into a single result. Five races and a discard reward boats that can keep producing results as the courses and conditions change.
But the first markers have been laid down. Defending line champion Equilibrium has started with another win, Clockwork has opened its PHRF campaign at the front, and Rum Bucket is only 1m 15s away from the PHRF lead.
With four races remaining, the Roy McDell Memorial is already shaping as an important second test.
