Class40 skipper rescued at sea after beacon alert in Rhum

1 min read

Benoît Sineau has been rescued safe and sound after the EPIRB beacon on his Class40 Ekinox-Rhétores was triggered during the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe.

Race Direction was alerted at 2.30pm Paris time on Saturday by maritime rescue coordination centres (MRCC) to the activation of Sineau's distress beacon. Officials immediately launched rescue procedures for the skipper.

Jules Bonnier, sailing Plastic Odyssey and among the competitors nearest to Sineau's position, was diverted to the area by race director Francis Le Goff.

Bonnier reached the scene at 8.45pm Paris time and recovered his fellow competitor, safe and unharmed, onto his own boat.

No further details have yet been given on the cause of the beacon activation or the condition of Ekinox-Rhétores. Race organisers listed the incident under "damage" in their official update.
