Charlie Dalin, the French offshore sailor who claimed victory in the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, has died aged 52. The Vendée Globe organisation confirmed his passing on 11 June. In January 2025, Dalin crossed the finish line at Les Sables d'Olonne after 64 days, 19 hours and 22 minutes at sea, having led the race for the vast majority of its duration. That result stands among the most consequential achievements in the event's four-decade existence.
Across multiple campaigns and every major ocean, Dalin established himself as one of the most reliably formidable figures at the top level of offshore racing. The tenacity he brought to the planet's harshest sailing conditions was the same quality that carried him through a deeply personal battle waged away from competition. Both tests demanded everything he had to give.
For a following that reached well beyond dedicated sailing audiences, Dalin came to represent something larger than any single race result. His campaign captured the imagination of people who understood, through watching him, precisely what the Vendée Globe asks of those determined enough to attempt it: exhaustive preparation and a psychological resilience that few sports place under comparable strain.
Alain Lebœuf, president of the Vendée Globe, was unambiguous in expressing that his regard for Dalin reached far beyond the podium. "Behind the champion, I don't forget the man, and the respect he inspired in everyone who knew him," Lebœuf said. "I think of his wife, his son, all his family. I offer them, on behalf of the entire organisation, my support, my deepest respect and my affection during this trial."
The Vendée Globe organisation extended its solidarity to Dalin's family and those close to him, indicating it would honour their need for privacy throughout the mourning period ahead.
