Aimee Bright made her intentions clear from the first gun in Poland, winning three of the opening day's four races to seize the early lead at the iQFOiL under-23 World Championships.
The Manly Sailing Club windfoiler now sits three points clear of Norway's Maya Gysler after day one on the Bay of Puck, where 148 sailors from 34 nations are chasing world championship honours.
Conditions were brisk, 15 to 18 knots, and the race committee got through all four scheduled course races. Bright made the most of it, dominating the women's fleet and putting real distance between herself and the chasing pack.
It's a sharp turnaround from her last major regatta, where she struggled at the senior iQFOiL World Championships in Weymouth. Illness disrupted her preparation there and she could only manage 19th.
Over the past 12 months the young Kiwi has picked up silver at the iQFOiL European Championships in Portugal in May, then another silver at the Olympic Classes Regatta in Long Beach in July.
She arrives at this under-23 championship as reigning silver medallist too, having finished runner-up in Portimão, Portugal last year in what was a Kiwi one-two, with Stella Bilger taking gold.
Bilger's circumstances have changed since then. She now races under the Australian flag, and after the opening four races sits sixth overall, 13 points adrift of Bright.
Three races down, plenty of regatta still to sail. But it's the kind of start that puts a marker down early.
