A high-speed collision during the opening race of the 2026 SailGP season in Perth caused severe damage to the Black Foils' F50 after the New Zealand team came together with the Switzerland SailGP Team. The impact forced them out of the Oracle Perth Sail Grand Prix immediately, and race officials subsequently handed the Black Foils seven event penalty points upon determining they were at fault.
Following the incident, SailGP Technologies carried out detailed inspections and non-destructive testing across the platform. The results offered some reassurance: the F50's primary structural elements remained intact, opening the door to a targeted repair rather than a full platform replacement.
The scope of that repair, however, is far from minor. Damage reaching into a key internal bulkhead means a completely new hull section must be manufactured at SailGP's centre of design and engineering in Southampton before being flown to New Zealand for installation.
“This repair is about as big as it gets in this timeframe,” said Joel Marginson, Director of SailGP Technologies.
"The critical structure remains intact, which allows us to repair rather than replace, but the damage extends into the bulkhead, making this one of the most substantial in-season composite repairs ever undertaken by the league," he continued.
To meet the timeline, multiple specialist teams are working in parallel across new hull, deck, stern, and steering components. Once the rebuilt section arrives in Auckland, it will be bonded into the existing platform, with full reassembly, systems integration, and calibration to follow before the F50 can return to racing.
Despite the compressed schedule and technical demands, SailGP Technologies has expressed confidence that the Black Foils will be ready to compete on home waters, with those inside the programme describing the effort as a race against time, precision, and engineering limits.
