Beneteau has unveiled the First 53, a 17.12-metre yacht designed to marry the comforts of contemporary cruising with the sharp, responsive character that has long defined the First performance range.
The exterior styling and interior layout come from designer Lorenzo Argento, whose work gives the First 53 a distinctive profile: a straight, powerful bow, a five-metre beam carried well aft and a low coach roof. Argento has also shaped the interior, splitting the saloon into a dining area on one side and a lounge with an L-shaped sofa and coffee table on the other. White lacquered bulkheads, moulded woodwork and teak flooring lend a contemporary feel, while handrails, large portholes and integrated sailing features keep the nautical character intact.
Below decks, the layout includes three double cabins, two or three bathrooms depending on configuration, a 2.40-metre tender garage and a generous forward owner's cabin. It's a boat suited equally to extended cruising and lazy days at anchor.
The hull is the work of Roberto Biscontini, whose background includes decades of high-level racing, among them America's Cup campaigns. Biscontini focused on the relationship between the centre of buoyancy and the sail plan to give the First 53 balance and direct feedback at the helm. A straight bow, twin rudders and carefully developed appendages are aimed at helping the yacht accelerate easily while remaining precise to steer.
"I have always focused on performance, both for the boats I sail and those that I build. The First Yacht 53 is very much like me!" Biscontini said at the yacht's launch.
The standard draught is 2.50 metres, which can be increased to 3.02 metres with an optional performance keel and lead bulb. A carbon rig is also available for owners wanting greater responsiveness.
During a sea trial off Catalonia, YACHT magazine put the First 53 Performance through a range of conditions. The yacht was moving under Code Zero in just five knots of wind. Upwind, it held between 8 and 8.5 knots while remaining light enough to steer with two fingers. Downwind, surfing the swell, speeds reached 13.5 knots. The magazine described the boat as one that "creates a sensation".
The First 53 extends a lineage stretching back to 1977 and the original First 30, through to well-known models such as the First 40.7. The range has built its reputation on yachts that blend cruising comfort with genuine sailing performance, and the First 53 carries that philosophy into a larger, more contemporary yacht while retaining the responsiveness the First name is known for.
