For a nation whose coastline stretches across more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia has long held untapped potential as a yachting destination. That potential is now taking shape in Benoa, where Bali Gapura Marina is rising as the country's first international full-service marina, a development its backers believe will fundamentally change Indonesia's place on the global yachting map.
The name carries deliberate significance. Gapura means "gateway" in Balinese, a word that nods to the island's cultural identity while also describing the marina's intended purpose: a new point of entry for international yachts arriving in the archipelago. It is an apt choice for a project that aspires to unlock maritime tourism at scale across one of the world's most remarkable island chains.
Ground was broken on 22 May 2025. The site covers 33,000 square metres and, when construction reaches completion in the third quarter of 2026, will accommodate 180 berths. Among those, 50 will be sized for superyachts of up to 90 metres. A broader programme of services, from technical support and a travellift through to lifestyle and waterfront facilities, is scheduled to follow by 2028.
Progress on site is moving at pace. Of the five docks planned for the development, Dock B will be the first to open. The smallest of the five, it will be comprehensively equipped, offering 48 berths, eleven concrete pontoons, and modern water and power pedestals. It is the first concrete proof of what the marina intends to deliver.
A pilot commercial opening is pencilled in for December 2025. At that stage, visiting yachts will be able to access water, electricity, and provisioning services, along with a dedicated Welcome Station set up to manage QICP (Quarantine, Immigration, Customs and Port) formalities. Construction on Docks A and C is continuing, and Dock D is being developed specifically as a floating breakwater.
The build-out continues in stages from there. Full technical services are expected to be operational by mid-2026, with the marina reaching its full complement of 180 berths later that same year. The waterfront lifestyle hub, adding a further dimension beyond marine services, is planned for completion by 2028, giving the project a trajectory that ties Bali Gapura Marina into the broader economic and cultural life of the island.
For a country with more than 17,000 islands, the arrival of a full-service international marina marks a shift the yachting world has been waiting for.
