Australia take Race 4 to share Sydney SailGP day one honours with Spain

Australia's Race 4 victory closed out day one of SailGP Sydney 2026, capping an afternoon of shifting breezes and fractious racing on Sydney Harbour.

The fleet wasted no time making things complicated. Before the boats even reached the first mark, penalties had already begun stacking up. Germany collected one following contact with Denmark in the pre-start, and Spain found themselves in trouble after an incident involving the USA. Protests flew through the opening exchanges as teams scrapped for position in a breeze that was fading and refusing to settle.

Racing through the early marks was unusually close. Canada, Sweden and Australia were all within seconds of Spain as the fleet rounded the first mark, with Spain holding the lead but no team yet able to break free. That tight formation held through the approach to Mark 2, the top six still within striking distance while the breeze kept shifting across the course.

The race turned between the second and fourth marks. Australia identified a pressure line developing across the course and committed to it early, threading through the lighter patches that brought several rivals to a near-standstill. The gains came incrementally rather than in one dramatic move, but their cumulative effect was clear. By Mark 3, Australia had significantly reduced the deficit to Spain. One leg later, they were in front.

Germany produced their strongest middle-leg sailing of the afternoon, working their way up to second through disciplined positioning and clean manoeuvres. Team USA built steadily through the fleet and secured third on the final downwind leg.

Spain, who had controlled the middle races of the afternoon, were unable to convert their recovery into a podium finish as the breeze softened, slipping back through the order as the leaders pulled clear.

Australia crossed the finish line in 10:23. Germany came home 58.5 seconds adrift, with the USA 1:33 back in third. Sweden claimed fourth, Spain fifth and Great Britain sixth. Italy and Brazil both lost ground in the closing stages and finished further down the order.

Four races into the Sydney event, the overall standings remain tight. Australia took out Races 1 and 4, Spain secured Races 2 and 3, and Germany's late charge to second has reshuffled the picture heading into Super Sunday.

The day's racing reinforced a pattern that has run through the regatta. On Sydney Harbour, where the breeze is unreliable and the shifts arrive without warning, the teams that control the start and commit early to the pressure are the ones who end up on the podium.
