The 2026 Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta Tugboat Harbour Race delivered one of the closest finishes in its history, with a blustery Waitematā providing the stage and a fleet of working tugs providing the colour. After more than half an hour of hard charging across the harbour, the entire contest came down to a single second.
That second separated Sparky from Capricorn Alpha at the top of the handicap standings. Sparky, the world's first full-sized electric ship-handling tug, finished with a corrected time of 27 minutes 07 seconds, her bold blue and green livery as distinctive as the quiet confidence she carried through the chop. Capricorn Alpha posted 27 minutes 08 seconds, industrial grey and relentless, denied the win by the narrowest of margins. Hauraki completed the podium with a corrected time of 28 minutes 13 seconds, her broad hull and dark working colours marking her out as a vessel built for exactly these conditions.
Line honours told a different story, one shaped by raw presence rather than handicap calculation. Hauraki stamped her authority from early in the race and held it to the finish, crossing first in 33 minutes 52 seconds. At 25 metres long and 11 metres wide, with close to 70 tonnes of bollard pull, she looked every bit the modern port workhorse driving through conditions that discouraged others from starting at all.
Capricorn Alpha followed in 34 minutes 21 seconds, just 29 seconds behind. Built in 2011, the 26-metre tug carries a 164-tonne deadweight and draws on over 1600 horsepower for the heavy lifts and hard days that define her working life. Pacific Way, just 14 centimetres longer and rated at 1200 horsepower, completed the line honours podium four seconds further back in 34 minutes 25 seconds, keeping the front of the race tightly bunched.
Beyond that leading trio, the harbour began to stretch the fleet. Turihaua, a 22-metre Azimuth tractor tug from 1977 powered by twin 625-horsepower engines, finished fifth on handicap with steady, dependable progress. Iona M, broad and solid at 23.95 metres long and 9.54 metres wide, followed her home, with Christine Mary close behind, her black hull and orange-red superstructure unmistakable against the grey water.
At the back of the fleet, history made its own kind of statement. The dark blue William C. Daldy, her bright yellow funnel unmistakable among the modern working tugs, completed the course in 53 minutes 43 seconds. Built in 1935 and coal-fired, she remains capable of 17 tonnes of bollard pull, and her place on the start line served as a reminder that endurance and character have their own kind of speed.
Completion times across the fleet ranged from 36 to 54 minutes, and the winning margin was one second. Electric innovation, modern diesel power, and coal-fired grit shared the same stretch of Waitematā, each bringing its own sound, smell, and personality to the course. Across nearly a century of maritime working life, that contrast is what makes the tugboat race one of the Auckland Anniversary Day Regatta's most watchable and enduring spectacles.
