American marine electrical firm ARCO Marine has brought out the Zeus A225-12V, an alternator it's billing as the first high output unit designed specifically for outboard engines. It puts out 225 amps and 3,500 watts straight from the motor, numbers that until now sat mostly in the inboard and diesel world.
The target market is boaties wanting to run air conditioning, stabilisers, inverters, fridges, trolling motors, decent stereo systems, water makers and sizeable lithium banks without hauling a generator around. ARCO claims charging speeds 2 to 3 times quicker than a stock alternator.
The gap it's filling
Outboard alternators as they come from the factory were built for a much lighter job: starting the engine and running the basics. Modern boats ask for a lot more. Between fridges, stereos, inverters, air con, stabilisers and lithium batteries, plenty of boats now draw more power than an 85 or 115 amp alternator can keep up with, particularly at idle or a few days into a trip away from power.
Petrol generators have filled that gap for years, but they come with their own baggage: weight, noise, fuel use, servicing. ARCO's argument for the A225 is that it delivers enough usable charge off the outboard itself that a genset becomes unnecessary in a lot of setups.
What it produces
ARCO's figures for the unit:
- 95 amps at 700 engine RPM, sustained, which is roughly idle
- 125 amps at 1,000 RPM, sustained, trolling pace
- 187 amps at 4,000 RPM, sustained, cruising
- 200 amps at 6,000 RPM
- 254 amps peak output, cold
It starts charging from 1,288 engine RPM, well below cruising speed. That's the figure ARCO is really selling, because a big peak number doesn't help much if a boat only reaches it flat out. Most of the time spent at anchor, trolling or idling through a channel sits well under that.
Doubling up on twin engine boats
Fit two A225 units to a twin outboard setup and ARCO puts combined output above 6 kW, enough that it starts to genuinely compete with a generator on paper. There's a backup benefit too: if one engine drops out, the other engine's alternator is still charging, something no generator can match. On weight, ARCO reckons pulling a genset out saves around 150 kg, while each A225 only adds about 2 lb. Noise, fuel and an extra maintenance schedule go with it.
Fitting it and what comes in the kit
The A225-12V, part number 4047, is built for 2018 to 2026 Mercury Verado outboards and uses a Verado mount with a 75mm K6 pulley. The kit includes the alternator itself, a positive fuse link wire, ground wire, battery sense wire and a replacement belt. Part number 4048 is the same alternator minus the belt. There's also an A225s version with matching output but a different pulley and mount, so ARCO is telling buyers to check fitment carefully before choosing between the two.
Things to sort out before fitting one
Because the A225 pushes a lot more current than a stock alternator, ARCO is upfront that it's not a like-for-like swap. Wiring, battery connections, bus bars and fuses may all need upgrading to cope with the extra load safely, and the company wants a qualified marine electrician doing the work rather than a DIY job. It's also worth checking with the engine manufacturer or dealer first, since fitting aftermarket parts like this can have warranty implications.
Boats running lithium batteries get a specific warning: ARCO wants the Zeus Alternator Shield fitted alongside the A225. The issue is that a lithium battery management system cutting out suddenly, or a battery switch being flicked at the wrong moment, sends a voltage spike back through the system that can destroy the alternator's diodes on the spot. The Shield is built to catch that spike and send it to ground before it does damage, and it's rated to the ISO 16750-2 load dump standard.
Keeping tabs on it
The A225 also links up with ARCO's Zeus Omega system, which brings Bluetooth and WiFi monitoring through a phone app, so output and performance can be checked without digging through a traditional wiring harness.
Cost and when it lands
ARCO has the Zeus A225-12V listed at US$1,199, currently on pre-sale with shipping due to start 30 June 2026. It's part of the wider Zeus High Energy lineup the company has been building out.
