Charlotte Rose has claimed the 2026 ILCA 6 Women's World Championship, closing out the Final Series with a 2-6 to seal the title.
It's a landmark result for American sailing. Rose becomes only the third US sailor to win the crown, following Paige Railey back in 2005, and the first non-European champion in two decades, since Lijia Xu of China broke Europe's stranglehold on the title in 2006.
Rose made no attempt to hide her emotion afterwards.
"It's unbelievable, I'm just really, really proud of how I did this week, and to put it all together at the end means so much," she said. "I'm so happy right now. It shows the process is working, and we're still two years out from the Games, so I'm not letting off the gas, I'm going to keep going until 2028, and the gold medal is the goal."
She's been in the class a long time, thirteen years, in fact, since she started sailing the ILCA at 13.
"It's really cool to see the upcoming sailors, not only in Ireland but across the world, and especially in the US, seeing more female sailors coming up too, it's great for the sport, and I'm glad I can be a role model for them," Rose said. "One thing I want to tell them is to never give up, and no one can tell you that you can't do something."
Celebrations tonight will be modest: a Guinness with her girlfriends, dinner, then bed. "I could sleep a good ten hours right now," she said, before turning her mind to home, family and the dog waiting for her there. LA 2028 remains the target, and gold the ambition.
Emma Plasschaert of Belgium took Silver after a 6-2 in the final race, adding a colour she'd been missing from her medal collection. Denmark's Anna Munch rounded out the podium with Bronze on a 5-4.
Plasschaert called it "a bit double, to be honest." She was delighted with Silver but knew there had been more on the table. "I think I did well to get back into it in the second Final Series race, and Silver it is, so I'm pretty happy," she said. She also noted how the event had connected with the local public, recalling a taxi driver bringing up how well Finland was doing at the Worlds. Country qualification in Fortaleza is next on the agenda.
For Munch, it was her first Worlds medal, and she was still coming to terms with it. "It still hasn't really sunk in, I'm just so, so happy," she said, before praising the new champion generously. "Charlotte was really dominant this week, and I definitely think we found the right World Champion at this event."
She summed up the final day simply: "playing chess with a heart rate of 200."
