Alinghi's refurbished AC75 slips into Naples through heavy rain

2 min read

Tudor Team Alinghi's refurbished AC75 slipped into Naples under cover of darkness, arriving at its new base in Bagnoli after a journey from Genoa through driving rain rather than any kind of celebration.

No sunshine, no Mediterranean sunset, no fanfare. Just a rain-soaked Neapolitan night and one of the most sophisticated racing yachts in the world easing into view.

The boat, known within the team as BoatOne, has been refurbished and reworked to meet the new Technical Regulations. It now sits in the city that will host the America's Cup in 2027.

Genoa is behind them now. The move marks the shift from preparation into the sharper, more pressured final stages of the Swiss campaign.

Ahead is the Bay of Naples, a tough stretch of water where every training session and every technical tweak will matter. The weather gave the arrival a cinematic edge, but there was something quietly fitting about slipping into town unnoticed rather than with a splash.

Campaigns like this aren't won in the spotlight. They're built in the unglamorous hours, through engineering graft and logistical effort that rarely gets seen, shifting yachts, gear and people across Europe in search of marginal gains.

At Bagnoli, Alinghi joins a growing cluster of America's Cup operations setting up along the waterfront. La Roche-Posay Racing Team is already up and running there, and GB1, the Challenger of Record, won't be far behind.

Switzerland remains one of only four nations to have won the America's Cup in its 175-year history, and that history is clearly part of what drives this challenge forward.

There will be brighter days ahead, when BoatOne gets out under full Mediterranean sun with Vesuvius in the background and its foils carving through the bay. For now, though, the picture is a different one: a serious piece of racing machinery, a rainstorm, a darkened waterfront, and a contender arriving without any need to announce itself.

Tudor Team Alinghi has arrived in Naples. The countdown continues.
