Black Cat Cruises has confirmed it has returned to full operations, with both its Akaroa Nature Cruise and Swimming with Dolphins experiences back on their regular schedules following a serious marine incident that temporarily disrupted the company's services.
The incident unfolded on Saturday when one of the company's tourist vessels grounded and subsequently capsized near Akaroa. The catamaran had been returning from a wildlife sightseeing trip when it reportedly struck rocks close to the harbour entrance. Passengers described a sudden, jarring impact, after which the vessel began taking on water. With 41 people on board, including crew members, the situation deteriorated rapidly.
Crew acted quickly, initiating emergency procedures and helping passengers into lifejackets while nearby commercial and recreational vessels moved to assist. Everyone aboard was successfully transferred to other boats and brought safely back to Akaroa Wharf.
The vessel capsized close to shore following the evacuation and remains partially submerged. Salvage operations have proven difficult, complicated by its position on rocks and by prevailing weather conditions. An exclusion zone remains in place around the site, and authorities have been monitoring the potential environmental impact given the presence of fuel and oils on board.
The Transport Accident Investigation Commission has launched a formal investigation, collecting information from crew, passengers, and witnesses. As is standard with such inquiries, the process will take time, and details established early may be revised as evidence is examined more thoroughly.
The safe evacuation of everyone on board underlines the importance of clear emergency procedures and the swift response of nearby vessels when a serious situation develops on the water.
