Lukas Walton-Keim has secured his place in the gold fleet at the Formula Kite World Championships in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, rounding off a composed and consistent day three with the result his campaign had been building toward.
The men's fleet was trimmed to its top 25 riders at the close of qualifying, and Walton-Keim delivered when the pressure was on. A run of top-10 finishes kept the New Zealand Olympian 19th overall, comfortably clear of the cutoff and firmly inside the gold fleet.
Spring weather in Viana do Castelo had produced unpredictable racing throughout the regatta, though day three offered some signs of easing. Competitors raced in 10–20 knots under clear skies before the breeze built again through the afternoon. Walton-Keim handled the shifting conditions without difficulty, and his results across the full programme left him well placed heading into the business end of the championship.
Not every New Zealand rider made the cut. Lochy Naismith wrapped up qualifying 39th overall and will contest the remainder of the event in the silver fleet, where he sits 14th in the standings.
Among the women, Lucy Bilger has been finding her rhythm as the regatta has progressed, and another encouraging day on the water moved her up to 24th overall.
The battle for the women's title shifted after American Daniela Moroz, a seven-time world champion, claimed her first race win of the regatta and moved back into title contention. Moroz now sits third overall, with defending champion Jessie Kampman of the Netherlands leading and France's Laurianne Nolot in second.
At the top of the men's standings, Singapore's Max Maeder continued to set the standard, adding five more race wins to his tally across another commanding day of qualifying.
Forecasters are predicting a strong and testing day four, with building chop and a stiff breeze set to greet competitors as gold and silver fleet racing gets underway.
