“Right now, I’m sailing at 17 knots, and it feels amazing,” Colman said. “The view is stunning, and life is good.”
For Colman, this moment of exhilaration is the reward for navigating the race’s many challenges.
Finding the Wind
While some competitors continue to struggle with light winds, Colman has found himself in a favourable pressure zone, allowing him to maintain speed and improve his position.
“I see the rest of the fleet moving, but they don’t seem to have the same wind pressure I do right now. There’s definitely more breeze on this side,” he noted.
This tactical advantage has set Colman up well as he approaches one of the race’s most critical hurdles—the doldrums.
The Doldrums Await
The doldrums, an equatorial zone notorious for erratic winds and sudden squalls, are fast approaching. Colman describes the current forecast as daunting, with the weather system looking “pretty thick” and “very active.”
“It’s not going to be easy,” Colman admitted. “I’m trying to pick my spot for the best corridor through, but it’s a big challenge.”
For a sailor who has recently adapted to slower, calmer conditions, Colman’s ability to embrace and overcome these challenges remains a hallmark of his Vendée Globe campaign.
“Good thing I’ve just gotten used to bobbing around like a cork,” he quipped, adding his characteristic humour to the mix.
